Improve Your Website’s Search Engine Visibility with an XML Sitemap
Creating and Submitting an XML Sitemap for Your Local Business Website
While Google’s web crawlers are highly sophisticated and can discover most pages on a website through normal navigation,
creating and submitting an XML sitemap provides an additional layer of assurance that all your important content is being found and indexed.
An XML sitemap is essentially a roadmap of your website, listing all the pages you want search engines to crawl and index. It provides valuable information about each page, such as the last modification date, change frequency, and relative priority compared to other pages on your site.
To create an XML sitemap for your local business website: Use a sitemap generator tool like XML-Sitemaps.com or Screaming Frog.
Manually create a sitemap using a text editor and following the proper XML format.
Use a content management system (CMS) plugin or built-in feature, such as the RankMath plugin for WordPress.
When creating your XML sitemap, be sure to include all the important pages on your website, such as your homepage, service pages, about us page, contact page, and any valuable blog posts or resources. However, avoid including low-quality or duplicate content, as this can potentially harm your search engine rankings.
Once you’ve created your XML sitemap, submit it to Google Search Console: Sign in to your Google Search Console account and
select your website property.
- Navigate to the “Sitemaps” section under the “Index” menu.
- Enter the URL of your sitemap file (e.g., https://www.yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml) and click “Submit.”
- After submitting your sitemap, Google will process it and begin crawling the pages listed. You can monitor the status of your sitemap in Google Search Console, which will display the number of submitted and indexed pages, as well as any errors or warnings that need to be addressed.
In addition to submitting your XML sitemap, it’s essential to regularly check your website’s indexation status using the “site:” command in Google search (e.g. site:yourdomain.com) and the “Coverage” report in Google Search Console. This will help you identify any pages that aren’t being indexed or any issues that may be preventing your content from appearing in search results.
By creating and submitting an XML sitemap to Google Search Console, you can provide search engines with a clear roadmap of your local business website’s pages, ensuring that all your valuable content is being discovered, crawled, and indexed. This can lead to improved search visibility, increased organic traffic, and ultimately, more potential customers finding and engaging with your business online.
